Mt. Major

Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms.

Remember to bring water, a jacket or pullover (it will be cooler at the summit), shoes appropriate for hiking on rocky ledge, and a snack.  Here's a view from the Summit:

About the trail

We'll hike up the Mount Major Trail, then come down on the Brook Trail as shown below.

For those who have not hiked Mount Major before and wonder what to expect, here is brief description.

The trail starts and ends with a gentle grade. After the fork, the grade increases a bit. The trail passes a brook in a couple spots.
Just before the summit are a couple fairly steep ledges. I would call this short section moderate, and the rest of the hike is easy.

There is a nice view of Lake Winnipesaukee from the ledge, and an excellent view in all directions from the summit. The summit makes a great spot for a snack break, but it can be breezy so pack accordingly.

The Mount Major Trail is a 3.4 mile loop trail located near Alton Bay, NH off Rt 11. Take NH 16N to NH 11W, follow NH 11W through Alton, then Alton Bay; 4.2 miles north of Alton Bay you will see a parking lot to the left.

The drive takes a bit over an hour.  The trail head is at the back of the parking lot to the right. Mount Major is a popular hiking spot so you may want to leave a bit early to find parking.
